Goals
Allow users to store, index, search, and share what they see on the web in an intuitive way without having to leave flow. Content should be created on top of the web and the user as well as other users should have full context on top of said annotations.
Background & Strategy
There have been several attempts at placing a meta-layer on top of browsing (pocket, inverse, instapaper, weava), but all have been standalone services in which the user has to adopt some sort of novel behavior outside of how they'd otherwise use the browser. A great annotation service should do the following:
- Create highlights, saves, and notes on top of internet content. This could mean long form text, videos, audio, etc.
- Record Screen-grabs, Screenshots of the Web, and annotations of pdfs to start. Ad as users ask for more.
- Do not edit the form in which the content is presented (no reader mode, proprietary player, etc)
- Let the user add context on top of the annotation, and let that context change depend on who the user shares with.
- These toggles have to feel quick, intuitive, and not get in the way of browsing the web.
- Ideally, the user can toggle what annotations they see at any point in time.
- Key is to limit annotations to meaningful ones.
- Share annotations and context in a way that allows for communication on top of the web consumed.
- Highlights alone aren't enough. People want to share their own thoughts, have conversations, and maintain context.
- Material beyond the highlights and annotations will be the difference.
- Annotations and context are indexable and easy to find, whether they are your own, or created by someone else.
